2011 Coretta Scott King Book awards: a look at the winners

4. Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty, by G. Neri

"Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty," written by G. Neri and illustrated by Randy DuBurke (young adult book, Lee & Low Books Inc., 96 pp.) is a 2011 King Author Honor book. This graphic novel features beautifully inked illustrations; however, the true story of Yummy is gritty and troubling. Readers are given insight into the harsh conditions in Southside Chicago that turned an 11-year-old child into a gang member and killer.
