10 best fiction books of 2011

From an unnamed Balkan landscape to a baseball diamond at a small Midwestern college to an alternate universe, the fiction offerings of 2011 ranged far and wide. Here are the 10 that our Monitor reviewers found to be the most outstanding.

1. "Binocular Vision," by Edith Pearlman

The settings in three-time O. Henry Award winner Edith Pearlman’s outstanding short story collection Binocular Vision (Lookout Books, 375 pp.) range from fictional Godolphin, Mass., to Jerusalem, Latin America, and czarist Russia. Throughout them all, notes Monitor critic Yvonne Zipp, “Pearlman writes with the kind of serene precision that would astonish any writer.” (CSMonitor.com review, 3/1/11)
