Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret stood on the balcony during the day for an official greeting to the crowds – then at night, she and Margaret left the palace with chaperones and danced in the street with crowds of people, unrecognized. At one point, she and Margaret joined crowds shouting for the king and queen, then waved to their parents from the street. "It was a unique burst of personal freedom," said Margaret Rhodes, their cousin. "A Cinderella moment in reverse, in which they could pretend that they were ordinary and unknown."
