2. 'Night Film,' by Marisha Pessl
"Special Topics in Calamity Physics" author Pessl follows journalist Scott McGrath – a writer in the process of trying to restore his good name – who learns of the death of a daughter of a mysterious filmmaker. Though the police say she committed suicide, Scott thinks there was more behind the young woman's death and begins to investigate her horror movie director father and his secrets. Nelson says the angle of a reporter trying to regain his reputation reminded her of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." "He gets sort of drawn into this very dark life of the father," she says of Scott.
