The Long Pursuit

I just finished reading The Long Pursuit by Roy Morris Jr. In my opinion, the value of the book is in the insights it gives as to how shrewd a politician Abraham Lincoln was and how troubled a politician and man Stephan Douglas was. Lincoln could not have become the iconic politician he did without Douglas. Douglas was initially more successful, but his positions were fodder for Lincoln’s rise at every step along the way. The most interesting parts deal with the nominating conventions of 1860, especially that of the Democrats.
