Sacco and Vanzetti: Guilty as Charged

I read Sacco and Vanzetti: Guilty as Charged by Edward M. Joffe. I wanted to see whether Joffe has an even-handed approach that matches the ”even-handed” approach that Terry Hartle found in his review of Watson’s book on Sacco and Vanzetti [CSM: Nov. 6, 2007]. Hartle claimed ”the trial was a farce.” By contrast, Joffe writes, ”Sacco and Vanzetti were not tried in an atmosphere of prejudice and hysteria. They received a fair trial and the post-conviction review of the proceedings was unprecedented in its thoroughness and fairness. Sacco and Vanzetti were not convicted because they were anarchists, which they were, but because they were violent murderers. Looking back, it is very difficult to comprehend the disconnect between truth and the myth that an objective and careful review of the evidence discloses.”
