I picked up Sea of Thunder by Evan Thomas because of the description of the battle of Leyte Gulf, a decisive battle in World War II, and the place where my dad, a Navy pilot earned the Navy Cross. But it is so much more. It is an amazingly detailed and insightful analysis of personalities and cultures that led to the war in the Pacific and that determined the outcome. It provides a fascinating, even-handed perspective on historical events that have either been forgotten or glorified beyond recognition.
