I am enjoying Richard R. Beeman's book, Our Lives, Our Fortunes & Our Sacred Honor: The Forging of American Independence, 1771-1776. Professor Beeman is a historian of the American Revolution and the early American republic. In this book, he paints a fascinating portrait of the delegates to the Continental Congress as they struggle to cope with the deepening conflict with Great Britain that leads them to eventually issue the Declaration of Independence. The serious work they undertook to overcome severe internal conflicts and to achieve consensus is a valuable lesson for today.
