22. Why is Black Friday called Black Friday?

Retailers operate at a financial loss during most of the year (in the red), and the busy shopping day after Thanksgiving marks the first day many of them operate at a profit (in the black).

 

The term was coined by Philadelphia police officers to describe the chaos and heavy traffic that accompanied the day after Thanksgiving.

 

Named after Cornelius Black, a 19th-Century Manhattan drugstore owner who offered deep discounts on his wares the day after Thanksgiving.
