Deals on Xbox 360 consoles and accompanying games are plentiful this week.

We're coming to you live from the middle of the August 2014 desert, this desolate wasteland where the most exciting video game release we can expect is the console version of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. But don't despair gamers, we've found a silver lining to this cloud: five Editors' Choice gaming deals. Rent a video game from Redbox for free, grab a Syba Xbox headset for just $10, and nab the cheapest Xbox 360 console ever.

  1. Redbox 1-Night Video Game Rental
    Store: Redbox
    Price: Free
    Lowest By: $2
    Expires: August 16

Is It Worth It?: When there's nothing on TV, the obvious choice is for you to rent a movie. So what do you do when there's no new games out? Rent an old favorite, of course! Reserve your game from Redbox online and you'll see a $2 discount in cart. Even if you decide to keep it longer than one night, the first day's still free.

  2. Titanfall for Xbox 360
    Store: Microsoft Store
    Price: $29.99 with free shipping
    Lowest By: $8

Is It Worth It?: Titanfall has been billed by critics and gamers alike as the best reason to buy an Xbox One. Of course, if you don't have any otherreasons to upgrade to a next-gen console, then we suggest snatching up this $30 copy for Xbox 360 instead. "The 360 version of Titanfall holds up well as an overall experience," Game Informer noted. "Players who have not yet made the jump to a high-end PC or new-gen console have a competent way to play one of this year’s most exciting games, and that’s a chance that shouldn’t be missed by quibbling over visual hang-ups."

  3. Syba GamesterGear XB200 Cruiser Gaming Headset
    Store: Fry's Electronics
Price: $9.99 via $30 mail-in rebate with free shipping
    Lowest By: $47

Is It Worth It?: Practically essential to the console gaming experience, a good headset will usually make a massive dent in your wallet. That's not the case with the XB200 Cruiser, which drops to just $10 after the rebate above (a $47 savings). Compatible with the Xbox 360 (or Xbox One with an adapter, sold separably), this headset features 57mm drivers, a frequency response of 20Hz to 20KHz, a detachable mic, and in-line volume controls.

What is the Monitor difference? Tackling the tough headlines – with humanity. Listening to sources – with respect. Seeing the story that others are missing by reporting what so often gets overlooked: the values that connect us. That’s Monitor reporting – news that changes how you see the world.

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

If you’re looking for bran muffin journalism, you can subscribe to the Monitor for $15. You’ll get the Monitor Weekly magazine, the Monitor Daily email, and unlimited access to CSMonitor.com.
