A western Indiana woman is trying to inspire a love of music in children and families who might lack the means to pursue their interests.

Kathleen Culver established the For the Love of Music Fund in Vigo County with $500 in seed money and is asking for donations to help the effort to provide financial support to fifth- and sixth-grade students so they can participate in band, choir or orchestra.

"If they are discouraged at that age, I'm afraid they won't pursue it," she said.

Money from the fund could cover the costs of instrument rentals, voice lessons or band uniforms.

Jenny Thomas, executive director of the Vigo County Education Foundation, said a panel of music teachers and an administrator will decide how the money is distributed.

She said the foundation's goal is for the fund to be sustainable. Contributions are tax-deductible.

"We won't award it all at once," Thomas said.

She praised Culver for initiating the idea.

"I think it's outstanding that a member of our community is such an ardent supporter of the arts and so committed to providing music assistance to students throughout our school corporation," she said.
