Author Salman Rushdie's 1998 novel 'The Satanic Verses' offended some Muslims to the extent that a fatwa was issued against him by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then the Supreme Leader of Iran, on Feb. 14, 1989. Mr. Rushdie went into hiding for years. In 1989 there was a failed attempt on his life.
