A member of an emergency services special unit fires a shell towards the upper slopes to clear snow buildup above the Transcaucasian highway near the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz on Sunday. Avalanches are a constant threat on the road which is the only route connecting Russia to South Ossetia.
