Review: 'Confessions of a Shopaholic'

( PG ) ( Monitor Movie Guide )

Despite Isla Fisher's comic energy, this chick-lit movie falls flat in every department.

Isla Fisher stars in 'Confessions of a Shopaholic.'

Isla Fisher is such a bundle of comic energy that watching her spin her wheels in the aggressively unfunny "Confessions of a Shopaholic" counts as cruel and unusual punishment – for her as well as for us. This latest cinematic entry in the ditz pageant, coming after "Bride Wars," is not exactly a feminist tract. On the other hand, these movies, which also include "He's Just Not That Into You" and "Sex and the City," are immensely popular with women, who no doubt have had to sit through way too many male action fantasy films. It's not the retro attitudes in "Confessions" that bother me (at least not much). It's the lack of laughs. Grade: C- (Rated PG for some mild language and thematic elements.)
