Flypaper: movie review

'Flypaper' has an entertaining premise – two gangs trying to rob the same bank at the same time – but falls down on the execution.

About these ads

What happens if two different gangs attempt to hold up a bank at the same time? It’s a funny premise deserving of a better movie than “Flypaper,” starring Patrick Dempsey as a supersmart innocent bystander and Ashley Judd as a bank teller held hostage.

Director Rob Minkoff and his writers Scott Moore and Jon Lucas are trying for a cross between “Dog Day Afternoon” and a “Columbo” episode, with some buffoonish slapstick thrown in courtesy of one of the gangs, Peanut Butter (Tim Blake Nelson) and Jelly (Pruitt Taylor Vince). One thought that occurred to me while pacing myself through “Flypaper": With the economy being what it is, will there be a rash of bank robbery movies? Grade: C+ (Unrated.)
