Roses and Thorns

A poem.

We are discussing earnestly where
we went wrong; mistakes you made
and mine. "Well, on the one hand,"
you insist, and I do not agree saying
again, "But on the other hand..."
Then holding up your hand
(which is still holding mine)
you laugh: "Which one is yours?"
And I recalled my grandmother,
an avid gardener, reminding me,
"As long as you have roses,
never mind the thorns."
