Small Birds

A poem

Small Birds Nine gulls flew loud and high, blown inland
by an angry wind; our crows took off, confused;
the cardinal found shelter in the elm. But all
the long dark night, the thought of small birds
trembling in their nests through rain and
lightning fierce and white, kept me from sleep.
My heart was wandering through a sadness for
the way storms work to tear our worlds apart.
Then morning came with bright apologies;
the sun was placing on each leaf traces
of rainbows while the robins, sparrows, wrens
were making preparation for another ordinary
day. Teach me, small birds; teach me the way
to have a trusting heart like yours.
