A Sudden Thaw

A poem.

A Sudden Thaw

The glint, the movement
on the estuary,
we've been frozen in
for three days. Everywhere
the diamonds sparkle,
slowly the ice is sliding
on the tide, large chunks
in the channel, a giddy
group, breaking away.
They're celebrating
on the surface of the
water, like a gathering
armada, all of the shiny
pieces picking up speed,
on their way toward
freedom, sailing to
Byzantium, a harbinger
of spring.
