Summer Sings a Line From Carl Sandburg

A poem.

The barking dogs debate
with morning traffic.
"It is too early and I
am not yet footloose."*

Soon the emperor of ice cream
trucks down the street;
ching-ching, ching-a-ching,
and the day folds into afternoon.

The cat complains and the catbird
scolds back from the old oak;
mree – mree, you can't catch me;
as evening creeps up quietly.

Suddenly the moon slides up
through darkened trees.
But "it is too early and I
am not yet footloose."

– B.R. Strahan * from "Broken-Face Gargoyles"
