Carmageddon hits Los Angeles: Five ways to cope

2. Leaving town

People walk in the surf at Seabright State Beach on a sunny, warm afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif. One way to avoid the traffic this weekend is to get out of town.

“Are you kidding? I’m outta here,” says Gordon Lawrence, who plans to seize the opportunity to visit a new girlfriend in Fresno. “Traffic in this town is already nuts on the weekend, so I am only too happy to say, ‘C’est la vie,’ for a few days.”

He lives north of the closed segment and will head further out of the city. He’ll get up at 6 a.m. Saturday and head out north on the 405 before any traffic activity has started, he says. Although key on-ramps to the 405 will be shut off as of 7 p.m. Friday, full closure doesn’t happen until midnight.

“If I get going at the crack of dawn, I should beat the worst of it,” Mr. Lawrence says.
