Actor Fred Thompson made a bid for the presidency in 2008, campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

Thompson announced his candidacy on "The Tonight Show" in September 2007. After hovering around third and fourth in Republican primaries, Thompson withdrew from the presidential race in January 2008. He then went on to speak at the Republican National Convention in September in Minnesota and returned to acting and hosting "The Fred Thompson Show," a radio program.

Before his bid for president, Thompson was a Tennessee senator from 1994-2003.
