Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson, who has been under criminal investigation for alleged cronyism and favoritism involving HUD contractors, resigned Monday, citing family reasons.

The Supreme Court sided with Delaware Monday, blocking a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal that New Jersey wanted to build on its part of the Delaware River. The justices ruled that safety concerns made it no "ordinary" project.

Southern California Edison has received the approval of the state's utility commission to undertake a massive solar project that will use the rooftops of commercial buildings to generate 250 megawatts of electricity. The plan calls for installing about 1 megawatt of capacity per week over the next five years to increase power from renewable sources.

Bankrupt Aloha Airlines, which has served Hawaii for more than 60 years, said it ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure the financing needed to continue operation after Monday. The carrier struggled to cope with increased competition and rising fuel prices.

For the third time in recent weeks, a motorist on a southern California freeway was shot and killed Sunday. Investi-gators said they didn't believe the latest fatality, on Highway 101 in the San Fernando Valley, was related to earlier shootings.
