Tent cities are cropping up in American cities at the fastest pace in a generation, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless, which says that nearly 61 percent of local and state coalitions report a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007.

A shift away from heavy emphasis on SAT and ACT scores in the college admissions process is advocated by a special panel convened by the National Association of College Admis-sions Counseling, which is releasing its study at the group's annual meeting in Seattle this week. The panel supports more attention to high school grades in pre-

college courses as a predictor of college success.

Investigators are interviewing six minors temporarily placed in Arkansas state custody following a weekend raid of a ministry complex suspected of child pornography activities, officials said Sunday. The courts will decide how long the children, thought to be 12- to 14-year-old girls, will be held during the probe of the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries in rural Fouke, Ark. Alamo is a convicted tax evader.

Babe Ruth's daughter helped close down Yankee Stadium Sunday by handling the ceremonial first-pitch honors for the Yankees' last game in "The House That Ruth Built." The team, which averted playoff elimination at least for a night by defeating Baltimore, will move into a brand new $1.3 billion ballpark across the street in 2009, also to be called Yankee Stadium.

The 12-man US team ended its Ryder Cup golfing frustrations Sunday in Louisville, Ky., when it completed a start-to-finish, three-day triumph over the Europeans in the biennial team showdown. Even without Tiger Woods, who is recuperating from knee surgery, the Americans, prevailed 16-1/2 to 11-1/2 after losing three in a row and five of the last six meetings.

AMC's "Mad Men," about the Madison Avenue advertising world of the 1960s, won "best drama" honors at Sunday's Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. NBC's "30 Rock" swept the major comedy awards, including for best series, actor (Alec Baldwin), and actress (Tina Fey). HBO's 10-Emmy haul was led by the "John Adams" mini-series.
