Divers trying to retrieve the missing left engine from a US Airways jetliner, which splash-landed safely last week in the Hudson River with 155 people aboard, suspended the search until Tuesday because of dangerous ice floes. Over the weekend, the plane was lifted from the river and loaded onto a barge , which transported it from New York to a New Jersey marina. The plane's "black box" recorders have been recovered.

Advisers to President-elect Obama said he stands behind Timothy Geithner as his choice for Treasury secretary despite Geithner's $34,000 tax-filing error, and that they expect Geithner to be confirmed.

The average global temperature in 2008 was the eighth warmest on record, or 0.88 of a degree F above the 20th-century average of 57.0, according to the National Climatic Data Center in Washington, D.C. All 10 of the warmest years on record have occurred since 1997.

Circuit City will go out of business, closing 567 stores that employ 34,000 workers, after failing to find a buyer or refinancing, the bankrupt consumer electronics retailer announced late last week amid a flurry of layoff notices. Other companies to declare workforce reductions of 1,000 positions or more include Hertz, ConocoPhillips, and chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices.

According to employment forecasts, New York City will lose 181,00 jobs in 2009, including 50,000 in the financial services sector, making it the worst-hit US city, based on data released by the US Conference of Mayors. All but five of 363 metropolitan areas are expected to experience job losses.
