A German ICE high speed train enters the Channel tunnel that links France to Britain as part of a test, on Oct. 13.

Also known as the "Chunnel," the tunnel that connects France and England from under the English Channel is the longest underwater rail tunnel and the longest international rail tunnel. Of the 31.4 miles of tunnel, 23.5 of them are underwater. The project was started in 1988 and completed in 1994.
