Secret war with Iran

The United States, Israel, and some European nations appear to be engaged in a widening covert war with Iran, which they suspect of developing nuclear weapons under the guise of civilian nuclear power. The war has already seen assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists, mysterious explosions at Iran’s missile and industrial facilities, and the Stuxnet virus that set back Iran’s nuclear program.

In December, Iran gained possession of a US stealth drone spying on a nuclear site. An Iranian engineer told the Monitor that Iran had hijacked the drone by manipulating its global positioning system coordinates, making it land in Iran. The event raises the risks for future US surveillance operations.

Scott Peterson, the Monitor's Middle East correspondent, keeps an eye on Iran from Istanbul, Turkey.

Highlights of the Monitor's coverage of the secret war with Iran:
