Kingdom Tower: Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal speaks at a news conference in Riyadh August 2. Prince Alwaleed unveiled plans to build the world's tallest tower in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, signing a 4.6 billion riyal ($1.23 billion) contract with Bin Laden Group.

The investment company headed by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal says it plans to complete the world's tallest tower in just over five years time.

The Kingdom Holding Co. did not say Sunday when work would begin on the Kingdom Tower.

The $1.2 billion tower will be roughly two-thirds of a mile (1 kilometer) high.

It is part of a $20 billion mega project on the outskirts of the Red Sea city of Jiddah.

The tower will be built by the Saudi Binladen Group construction conglomerate.

It will cost $400 million and feature a Four Seasons hotel, luxury condominiums and offices that encompass around 5.4 million square feet.

Currently, Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the world's tallest tower at 2,717 feet (828 meters).
