The assassination bombing came amid several days of fighting within Damascus â€“ the first sustained rebel campaign in the heart of the capital city. While recent reports put government forces back in control of the Midan neighborhood in the central part of the city, the violence in Damascus, the seat of the Assadâ€™s power, suggests that his regimeâ€™s power is waning. At the very least, it will sow doubts about the governmentâ€™s capacity.
"The capital used to be safe,â€ť activist Mustafa Osso told the Associated Press earlier this week. â€śThis will trouble the regime."
