Mayor White of Boston names 'Olympics' panel
Mayor Kevin H. White has appointed a nine-man committe to investigate the possibility of holding an alternative Olympics here this summer, Monitor staff writer Sara Terry reports. Athletic facilities at nearly a dozen metropolitan campuses could be used to host athletes from countries siding with the US in its boycott of the Olympic Games in Moscow, Mr. White said. However, he said the cost of sponsoring the event -- which he estimated at $25 million -- would have to be borne by the federal government.
The committee, which includes Boston University president John Silber and Tufts University president Jean Mayer, is expected to present its study to the White House within 30 days.
