China panel proposes a curb on free speech

Urged by the Chinese Communist Party, the 120-member Standing Committee of the National People's Congress has proposed the abolition of free speech and wall posters, the official New China News Agency said Tuesday. The full congress is expected to approve the law in June. Legislative members said these freedoms must be abolished because they are used by "people with ulterior motives" to try to overthrow Communist rule, the news agency said.
