Balloon floats into history with transcontinental lift

Transatlantic balloonist Maxie Anderson and his son Kris landed here Monday, to complete the first balloon flight across North America. The 3,000 mile trip, which began Thursday in San Francisco, was planned to end in Kitty Hawk, N.C., but the balloon was blown hundreds of miles off course. The 75-foot-tall balloon landed on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, about 285 miles from Bangor, Maine.
