Court OKs singling out Iranians for deportation
The Supreme Court, over one dissent, left intact Monday a ruling that President Carter may single out Iranian students for investigation and deportation if they are found to be in this country illegally. Mr. Carter issued the order last November after Iranian militants took over the US Embassy in Tehran and seized American hostages.
A Justice Department spokesman said 615 Iranians had either been deported or left the United States voluntarily since last November.
Deportation proceedings were pending against more than 6,800 Iranians, he said. Most of the estimated 60,000 Iranians in the US had been found to be legal residents, he added.
