Amnesty names Romania in rights violations

Romania uses a wide range of penalities against dissidents, including confinement in mental hospitals in violation of human rights, Amnesty International charges. In a 20-page briefing pamphlet on the Communist nation issued this week, the human rights organization said Romanian dissidents are punished by imprisonment, "corrective labor" and intimidation, and being fired from their jobs. Victims include unofficial trade union, religious activists, emigrants, and critics of the Bucharest government's human rights violations.
