President Sadat of Egypt would like to see his friend, Jimmy Carter, re-elected. For that reason, Sadat Probably won't do anything rash to upset the Palestinian autonomy talks for the next four months -- even though the talks aren't going anywhere right now.

Egyptian officials think that keeping the talks alive denies Carter's opponents a chance to throw stones at the President's major foreign policy triump, the Camp DAvid accords.

A Carter defeat would be unsettling to Cairo. Carter is known and trusted. He has also come a long way in recognizing the rights of Palestinians, as well as Israel "inflexibility," in Cairo's view.m
