Freedom from drug dependence

Drug use is an unhealthy symptom of a society crying for freedom. This moral and spiritual disorientation undermines individuals and institutions with heartache, inefficiency, absenteeism.

What can be done?

There is an effective spiritual and moral solution -- many people, through Christian science, have come off medicinal drugs, and some off "pleasure" drugs, and have found a way back to healthy, useful lives. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and founded this Science, writes: "Our system of Mind-healing rest on the apprehension of the nature and essence of all being, -- on the divine Mind and Love's essential qualities. Its pharmacy is moral, and its medicine is intellectual and spiritual, though used for physical healing." n1

Christ Jesus healed the sick and changed sinners through this "apprehension of the nature and essence of all being." And divine Science continues Jesus' healing and reforming ministry. It shows the nature of God as Spirit, soul, Mind, Love, and of man as God's spiritual offspring.

Christly prayer is the perfect standard for thought and action. In such prayer, anything unlike the true nature of God and man is detected and rejected as powerless. Because impurity is unlike Soul, ignorance unlike Mind, hate unlike Love, matter unlike Spirit, therefore impurity, ignorance, hate, even matter, are no part of man, the image of god. god and His qualities are the Christly healing medicine that frees from materiality and drugs.

"Pleasure" drugs claim the ability to bring a spiritual state without moral redemption. They temporarily hide the pain of failure and restlessness with a peace that is deceptive. But when effect is gone, the problems remain unsolved.

Drugs are supposed to affect the body, but it is really one's faith in them -- along with general human faith -- that determines the result. One must believe matter has power to heal, to quiet, to stimulate.

The power of scientific prayer removes the supposed need for drugs. Spiritual yearning, forwarded through prayer, stops drug craving. Rightdoing removes the symptoms and causes of drug dependence. There can be no bad effects from an illusion once one stops believing it.

With moral pharmacy, we have a God- given right to resist and destroy evil and its tyranny. Mind has no compulsive urges, Spirit no dependence on drugs or matter. Our individuality as sons and daughters of god is forever intact.

A lonely high-school freshman sought "friends" in drugs and drinking. He went from marijuana to LSD to opium. Soon he was peddling drugs. He was arrested and place on probation with weekly counseling. He fulfilled the counseling requirement by talking with a Christian Science practitioner and attending Sunday School.

He gradually gained a sense of worth, integrity, and self-respect. He called it "a real consciousness-raising experience." He was soon off drugs and probation, successfully playing team sports, and getting good grades. He is now graduated from university, working in a good job, and happily married. The spiritual medicine and moral pharmacy have brought complete healing and reformation.

John the Baptist said of Jesus, "The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand." n2 The moral and spiritual power of Christly prayer and living can bring complete freedom from any kind of drug dependence.
