UN called to discuss Palestinian question

Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim Monday summoned the UN General Assembly into a special emergency session today (July 22) on the Palestinian question. Arab countries have asked for the special UN session to demand international sanctions against Israel because of its policy of settlement in occupied Arab territories.

At this writing, the session was opposed only by the United States, although France "had expressed reservations." Us objections were formally overruled Friday when some 90 nonaligned nations decided to support the request.

Israeli Ambassador Yehuda Blum said Arab demands for the special session, supported by the nonaligned nations, was aimed at undermining the US-backed Israeli-Egyptian peace process in the Middle East.
