Japan to appeal US levy on imports of trucks
Japan will file an appeal with the secretariat of the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade, based in Geneva, over the US decision to impose a 25 percent levy on small-truck imports from Japan. International Trade and Industry officials also said Thursday that Japan will propose bilateral negotiations to settle the issue. The newly increased import levy on semifinished small trucks from Japan will increase their cost by about $800.
Nissan (Datsun), Japan's secondlargest auto producer, plans to take legal action, and Toyota says it may have to close its US manufacturing plant because of the new tariff.
