Lag cools demand for engineers

Demand for engineers and scientists, which for more than two years was remarkably resilient against all other economic indicators, is showing signs of decline, according to Deutsch, Shea & Evans, Inc.

The firm's high-technology recruitment index is down eight points from May and 18 points from February. This is the fourth consecutive month that high-technology demand has declined, and the index has not been lower since January 1978. It is predicted that it will continue to decline over the next few months.

It seems that high technology has been hit by the general economic crunch -- which it had resisted for so long.
