Anderson: Carter memo warns banks of loan risk

Independent presidential candidate John Anderson charges that President Carter's campaign leaders have circulated a memo among New York banks warning them of a legal risk in lending money to the Anderson campaign, Monitor correspondent Clayton Jones reports. The Federal Election Commission can reimburse candidates if they reach a certain percentage of the votes, but Mr. Anderson says Mr. Carter's legal advisers are trying to dissuade bankers against lending him money on that basis. He says that since he declared his independent candidacy, the "National Unity" campaign has raised $7 million, and he is seeking a $10 million line of credit from the banks.
