Reagan promises to name woman to Supreme Court

Ronald Reagan said that if he is elected, one of his first nominees to the Supreme Court will be a woman. "I am announcing today that one of the first Supreme Court vacancies in my administration will be filled by a woman, the most qualified woman I can possibly find, one that meets the high standards that I will demand for all my court appointments," he said.

He said that as governor he signed 14 statutes eliminating practices that discriminated against women, and as president, he would follow his convictions and appoint intelligent, committed, qualified, and responsible women to important jobs in his administration.
