1st-time marathon runner wins in N.Y.; Rodgers 5th

Alberto Salazar, a 22-year-old college senior running his first marathon, ended Bill Rodgers's four-year hold on the New York Marathon by capturing the race in a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 41 seconds. Rodolfo Gomez of Mexico finished second. Rodgers, who stumbled and fell shortly after the 14-mile mark, Finished in fifth place. Norway's Grete Waitz broke her own world mark, winning the women's division of the marathon in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 41 seconds.
