Clashes in Beirut end, but Tyre under shelling
Three days of heavy fighting between rival right-wing militias ended Wednesday , and government troops were restoring order, Beirut Radio reported. It said at least 2 persons were killed and 40 wounded during the battle in the predominantly Christian district of Ain al-Remmaneh. The fighting pitched members of the powerful Falangist Party against the National Liberal Party in the worst clash between the two sides since the Falangists virtually crushed the NLP's "Tigers" militia last July. As relative calm returned, word came that the city of Tyre and its suburbs were under artillery bombardment by Israeli-backed rightists who have been shelling southern regions for several days.
