The giant panda is growing in numbers. The Guangming Daily newspaper said the panda, one of the world's rarest animals, is on the increase in a remote part of Sichuan Province, and that since last year nine had been caught, including four young. They have often been seen coming down from the mountains recently, some bringing their young with them. Authorities say there are only about 1,000 pandas in the wild, all in China. In June, China and the World Wildlife Fund announced a $2 million project to save them from extinction.
