Virginia Electric & Power Company, a pioneer in nuclear energy, has canceled a partly built $2 billion reactor and expects other utilities to reassess their own nuclear programs. Citing reduced growth in demand, soaring costs, regulatory uncertainty, and a belief conservation can postpone the need for an additional reactor until the late 1990s, Vepco announced termination of its North Anna 4 plant. Its president, William Berry, predicted power companies nationwide, beset with similar problems and projections, may have to consider similar action.
