Police leaves canceled over N. Ireland turmoil

All police leaves have been canceled in Northern Ireland because of concern for unrest arising from a hunger strike by seven jailed Irish guerrillas, police said. The British province's 7,000 police and 4,000 police reservists will be in a state of maximum readiness, the sources added.

Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) guerrilla sources said there was serious concern over one of the hunger strikers, Sean McKenna. But Britain's Northern Ireland Ministry said none of the seven hunger strikers, who are demanding political prisoner status, were in critical condition. Marches, ralleis, and outbreaks of rioting are occurring almost daily in areas inhabited by the Irish Catholic minority, and the IRA has exploded two bombs in London.
