An effort to save the 110-year-old Cape Hatteras lighthouse will begin next month, according to the National Park Service. The lighthouse is threatened by beach erosion, which has brought the Atlantic Ocean to within 60 feet of the structure.

The Park Service has accepted an offer from William Garrett of wilmington, Del., to give the service 550 erosion-control devices he invented. Dock and Marine Construction Company of Charleston, S.C., will install them free of charge.
