Polish Politburo ready to discuss union demands
Poland's ruling Communist Party Politburo, faced with crippling new strikes by farm and industrial workers, has declared itself ready to negotiate a settlement. The Politburo met to discuss union demands for an end to Saturday work and decided that the issue should be discussed by a group of experts from both sides. No date was set for a meeting with the union.
Meanwhile, strikes to support local and national demands flared up in stoppages in the provinces, and more such industrial action was threatened for today (Jan. 28). Solidarity leader Lech Walesa met with protesters supporting th e formation of a Rural Solidarity farmers union.
