The Monadnock Region Association in New Hampshire has prepared a new guide and map of 17 Maple Sugar Houses in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. Maple sugaring time comes in late March and early April when the nights are cold and the days are warm. Maple sugar is obtained by boiling the sap from sugar maples. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to yield one gallon of syrup. The gathering of the sap is done in two different ways. The old- fashioned method of gathering is with buckets and the new method is with plastic tubing taped into each tree and bringing sap directly into the sugar house or holding tank.

During this time, maple producers welcome visitors to their sap hosues to observe the boiling off process as sap is made into syrup, and you may be invited to taste sugar on snow and purchsae fresh syrup and maple sugar. For a copy of the new maple folder send 25 to Monadnock Region Association, Box 269, Peterborough, New Hampshire 03458. A phone call is suggested if you are travelling a distance.
