Boston Ballet maps S. Africa tour

The Boston Ballet is negotiating to send a company of 18 dancers to perform in South Africa in June 1981 as a preview to its June 27-July 11 booking at the London Colliseum. Although Rudolf Nureyev will appear in Swan Lake in London, he is not included in the South African stops.

Monitor dance critic Iris Fanger reports conditions set by the Boston Ballet for a South African tour include a fully integrated company playing to integrated audiences, the whole company to be housed in the same hotel, and principal dancer Augustus van Heerden, a black born in South Africa be accorded all rights and dignities under international law. In addition, the company hopes to be permitted to perform in the black township of Soweto. A company spokesman said that if the conditions were denied at any time, the company would leave. Mr. Van Heerden is expected to dance principal repertory roles for the tour.
