US teacher group to fight a Klan drive for students

The National Education Association is trying to combat what it says is a mounting recruiting drive by the Ku Klux Klan -- aimed at drawing school-children into the Klan. The NEA's president, Willard H. McGuire, said it is preparing to distribute curricula to its 1.7 million teachers to promote classroom discussions about the white supremacist group.

"We do not believe we are overreacting to the reports of KKK youth recruitment," Mr. McGuire said. "A resurgent Klan represents a threat that can't be ignored."

The teaching guide traces the Klan from its inception after the Civil War to its heyday after World War I, its forced retreat after 1960 civil rights legislation, and what the NEA terms its current r esurgence.
